Malaysia is developing at an astounding GMP rate average 8% annually. In line with the government's concept to move towards the Electronic Government by 2020, the market to convert all spatial data from manual to digital stood at RM 700 million for the year 2002 and RM 2 billion by the year 2005. This information technology infrastructure especially the spatial content has to be completed first before we step in the new millennium presently known as Digital Malaysia.

With the foresighted vision of the Prime Minister to establish Malaysia as the world first developer of the Multimedia Super Corridor (MSC) center, all states in Malaysia have made a jump-start to establish similar MSC model such as the establishment of Penang Net, Perak Cybercity, Sabah Network City, Malacca Intelligent City and so forth. All projects have the goals to be network up to the district level with appropriate technology and information technology infrastructure.

Also the Industrial Master Plan (IMP2) launched by the government in 1995 had the ambition to turn Malaysia as an IT country. In IMP2, the creation of spatial digital data is valued at RM100 billion up to the years 2005.
